VIS Vienna Independent Shorts is celebrating its 10 year anniversary in 2013. To celebrate the special occasion, we have come up with several programmes at other festivals and events as well as new projects. Short film fans can celebrate with us, too: You are asked to take part in an online voting to decide which film is to complete our "best of VIS" film programme at this year's festival. This section will be updated regularly.
They are everywhere nowadays: cat videos. No kind of home video is as often posted on Facebook and Youtube as cute kittens doing funny things. The Walker Art Center in Minneapolis approached this phenomenon in a semi serious way and called for submissions: Soon afterwards, 78 out of ten thousands films were screened open air in front of 10,000 people, according to the New York Times.
Collaborating with the Walker Art Center and St. Balbach Filmproduktion, we are delighted to bring the Cat Video Festival to Europe for the first time. The open air event in Vienna takes place at June 14th at Prater Jesuitenwiese (starting 8.30 pm) and will feature both highlights from the event in Minneapolis as well as curated programs and videos from the German speaking area.
For the first time ever, VIS Vienna Independent Shorts is happy to announce the release of two short films to be shown at a cinema in Vienna before the festival: Starting May 24th, Erdbeerland by Florian Pochlatko and Landerdbeeren by Esther Bialas will make for a wonderful "strawberry double feature"!
Vienna's community channel Okto will devote a two-hour-special to the festival's anniversary. All films were selected by VIS and were awarded by either the audience or juries in the past. The broadcast is scheduled for May 25th, 2013, at 9 pm.
On June 1st, we're going to ring in our birthday by showing a program compiled of highlights from the past 10 years. The films shown range from the team's personal favourites to lost treasures from the festival's beginnings to films people keep asking us about. To help us with our final decision, we asked you to choose your favourite film from three past festival winners in our online voting. The short film which got the most votes, Lisa Weber's "Kommt ein Sonnenstrahl in die Tiefkühlabteilung und weicht alles auf" (AT 2009), will now be included in the best of program.
Our friends at Vienna based women's film festival FrauenFilmTage (February 28th - March 8th, 2013) are celebrating their 10th festival edition this year, too. Naturally, we are happy to screen a short film programme consisting of extraordinary films by female directors that were shown at VIS in the last 10 years (including one film that is going to be on screen for the first time in Austria).
Date: Saturday, March 3rd, 9 pm at Filmhaus Kino

VIS is more than happy to present its very own special Short Film Punk Night at the avantgarde festival Donaufestival (April 25th to May 4th, 2013). Explosions and destroyment, rebellion and dissolution are the topics of the eight films and videos being shown.
